Reggio Emilia Inspired Learning

Great Brook School teaching and learning practices are Reggio Emilia inspired.  The child, the classroom environment, and the teacher are essential participants in our practices.   Through collaboration and community building, children are invited to present their ideas and learning in ways that are meaningful to them through play, art, drama, dance, music, and more.

Our evolving curriculum is focused on the principle that children are capable of their own learning. Teachers create environments and experiences that are based on the interests of the children. Providing children with a play-based emergent curriculum allows for creativity and freedom to explore and discover, which leads to deeper learning.  The school’s environment is inviting, warm, and safe with thought-provoking materials, sensory exploration, and proper equipment and supplies that create the opportunity for children to grow emotionally, socially, intellectually, creatively, and physically.

To ensure the needs of the child are met, our educators and administrators are highly qualified and skilled at documenting children's learning, developing and evolving curriculum based on children's interests, and modeling how to develop socially responsible communities and relationships.  In addition, they seamlessly incorporate Massachusetts Early Learning Standards and 21st-Century Skills to develop important habits of mind, which include self-starting, perseverance, problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication.

Another way that distinguishes Great Brooks School's approach to learning from other child-centered approaches is through the reinforcement of the seven guiding principles of Reggio Emilia.  Learn more about the seven guiding principles here
